concerns

I am concerned that my paper is not clear enough. I tried to make the problem and solution part of the paper very clear, but the justification part is going to need some more work. So i would just like some feedback on that. Also, i would like to know if the paper is clear enough and not too wordy because i usually have a problem with that.

A major issue around campus, considering we have an open campus, is security. People who are not apart of the University of South Carolina can easily wander onto campus at any given moment. This can lead to left, abduction, violence, and sexual abuse. The university needs to make it harder to access campus for people who have no need to be on campus, or maybe create more of those police polls. The university probably has not tried to heighten security due the the steep cost and the probable complaints from people.

Three perspectives would be the people trying to stop poaching and extinction, another would be the people who have grown up hunting animals in order to keep their society running, and the other is which way to best control poaching and the endangerment of species. The strongest is the one for people trying to stop poaching and extinction.

I need to document more sources.

I thought the conference was very helpful.

Planning essay 4

There in then the people who strive daily to protect the magnificent creatures on the earth who face extinction in the near future.
These people usually are for species not being endangered, but they also can sympathize with the side that needs these animals in order to maintain a functioning society in which to live and grow.
Some cultures were only able to survive through the killing of animals, and that is still true with many tribes or indigenous tribes around the globe.

I am probably going to write a proposal paper more than a policy. My topic is more about taking a stand or acting in order to help the cause.

I may do a little bit more research in order to make sure i have enough accurate information regarding the topic.
Solution:
My paper will probably be a proposal paper because i have more ideas as to what we should do than anything else. Therefore, i can strongly represent the side that is trying to prevent that is trying to stop the animals from becoming extinct.
I changed the overall structure of my paper in a big way. I decided to to have a longer introduction followed by the different views concerning the topic which i did not originally have.

The strongest element of my paper is how well i can convey the side that cares for the animals and the difference between the side that does not care for them nor believe in extinction.

I am concerned that the only side i have good information or enough information on is the people who do not try to help endangered species or species that are on the verge of being extinct, and that i did not pick a good enough topic that has two equal sides because most people want to protect animals as well as like these animals.

The Sides of Animal Poaching and Possible Extinction
The hunting and harvesting of animals for food and resources has been going on since the beginning of time. Ancient civilizations have relied on animals and the trade of animals for profit. Although hundreds of years ago no one believed that these animals would ever become extinct. This is an ever present issue in today’s world where poaching has drastically grown and species are not able to sustain a high enough number to protect them from becoming endangered, and as a result some species are on the brink of extinction. There are those whose civilization has been hunting indigenous species unique to their area for centuries, and they have used these animals as a means of life, food, and profit. Therefore, the aspect of not hunting specific animals is hard to fathom. There then are those who believe that many species are becoming extinct due to poaching, lack of care or protection, lack of natural habitat, and hunting for food or clothing purposes. These people are trying to raise awareness and stop poaching or hunting of certain species in order to preserve them on this planet. Some people are indifferent to the issue and continue to live their lives as if this is not an issue for them; however, they still may show some interest or sympathy for the animals that are on the verge of extinction.
The thought of animal cruelty and poaching is abstract for most African cultures because many were founding and sustained by hunting, and this worked out peacefully for centuries until people began hunting more than was produced. Some cultures were only able to survive through the killing of animals, and that is still true with many tribes or indigenous tribes around the globe. People argue against organizations they are trying to protect certain animals because these groups of people need these food and resources that come from these certain animals in order to maintain a productive and stable way of life. So these people feel it is unjust for them to be outlawed from the hunting of these animals. It is also true that the same people who rely on these animals for fundamental materials believe that poaching just for the soul purpose of money is unethical. All in all the people who do not think that hunting some close to extinct species is all that bad because it is what they know and in most cases it is tradition in the older cultures of the world.
There in then the people who strive daily to protect the magnificent creatures on the earth who face extinction in the near future. Organizations, groups, website, charities, and all sorts of funds have been put in place in order to protect the animals which face this threat.
Poaching seems to be one of the keys issues concerning extinction around the globe. Poaching is the hunting or killing of animals for trade. Trading includes selling these animals to buyers through various black markets. Some people kill animals just to obtain a part of that specific animal. Animals such as the rhino, which are sometimes killed solely for their horn, are under this category along with elephants that are hunted for ivory. There are some companies in Asian countries that trap and kill animals such as dolphins and whales, and the United Sates has no control over international affairs of this nature.
Excessive hunting is also a primary cause in the recent number of animal species that are becoming extinct. Animals are not able to produce as fast as humans are able to kill. Animals such as whales, rhinos, elephant, lions, tigers, bears, and all sorts of big cats are under this category and these are some of the main animals on the planet that would be detrimental to lose. These predatory animals help keep the other animal populations in order and in turn keep those animals away from peoples crops. Animals such as turtles are becoming extinct through all sorts of factors such as oil spills, loss of habitat, fishing nets, and even poaching. Many countries have started trying to outlaw poaching and hunting of endangered animals. It just is a matter of time before we find out if these laws and regulations were made too late.
As in most cases or issues in today’s world, there are those who are indifferent to the topic. They know it is present but would prefer to ignore what is going on. These people usually are for species not being endangered, but they also can sympathize with the side that needs these animals in order to maintain a functioning society in which to live and grow. Most people these people usually would suggest that laws be put into place and people who are poaching these animals or causing populations to decrease do to question reasons. They also feel that the people who need to continue to hunt animals be able to do so. These people also have little affect or anything to do with the topic which makes them fairly irrelevant to the subject of extinction or endangered species as well as poaching.
The topic of extinction and endangered species is sure to arouse people for some time to come. There will always be those to fight for these animals, and there will continue to be people who poach and hunt down species regardless of if they are endangered or not. It is also true that some cultures and tribes still live off of these animals, and there will surely be those who find the topic meaningless. Either way certain animal groups and species are diminishing. Some are dying off at a quicker rate than others. There are species that are even down to the hundreds in overall population. Poaching will continue to happen. So it is up to organizations or people who are dedicated to protecting these animals in order to save them from extinction. Same goes for people who rely on certain animals. In the end only time will tell what is to become of the issue and until then it is up to the people of the planet to pick a side and take a stand.

This source is very straightforward about Owing's feelings in regard to sea otters. She obviously is against the people who have anything to do with the endangerment or decrease of these animals, and wants to stop them at all costs. This is directed ti anyone who is for the protection of sea otters and support animal preservation around the globe. The article basically covers the wrong doing of fur trading that caused a steep decline in otter population. It also covers her organization to protect these creatures, and how this can be applied to all animals that are having difficult. As well as the continuous problems with over fishing, oil spills, and fur trade that still exist. I agree with the authors claims and her position on the topic at hand as well as learning more about the subject in regards to sea otters. This is another source that shows the continual injustice of animals and can be applied in most circumstances in regard to my topic.

The text again deals with the topic of poaching. The affect it has had on African wildlife has been detrimental in past years, but the bringing about of acts, laws, law enforcement, and regulations has been helpful in bringing back animals that use to graze these lands. Many people have included these animals in their traditions and cultures, and they have been around for centuries if not longer. Therefore, the recent severe decrease in animals that are indigenous to Africa has upset many people. The people who have been affected by poaching and hunting have tried to stop these themselves and have gotten the government involved. This may be the best defense for animal regulations.
International Business Times. Javan Rhino Poached to Extinction in Vietnam. International Business Times, Tue, 25 Oct 2011
The Javan rhino has recently become extinct in Vietnam. The last one had been found dead on the ground with its horn cut off. Many people would blame the Vietnamese government for not putting forth enough effort in regards to the matter, but regardless it should have been a collective effort by the Vietnamese. Some people believe that these rhino horn are helping cure cancer although it has not actually been proved by doctors. However, Javan rhinos still exist in Indonesia and South Africa, but there numbers are still very low. Organizations such as the World Wildlife Federation and International Rhino Foundation arte trying their best to preserve these magnificent creatures, but it is in turn up to the people to save them.
Fimrite, Peter. "U.S. agrees to list Pacific sea turtle as endangered species." San Francisco Chronicle 17 Sept. 2011: C2. Gale Opposing Viewpoints In Context. Web. 8 Nov. 2011.
Pacific sea turtles have recently been moved from being listed as threatened to being listed as endangered, and primarily the different species of loggerhead sea turtles. A cause for the newly titled endangered species is due to poaching, fishing, unprotected or poor habitat, oil spills, and trash. These animals live anywhere from southern California, Japan, Mexico, and Taiwan in where they give birth or migrate. It is said that the most potent cause in the decline of these turtles is the huge oceangoing fishing nets that catch these turtles and causes them to drown. It has also been reported that most of these ships are that of Japan and Taiwan which means that the U.S. has little to no control over this catastrophe. The most startling fact is that these sea turtles have decreased by 80% in the past decade.

This article deals with the recent increase in awareness and law enforcement in the Republic of Congo. The author is clearly for the protection of endangered species and the prosecution of all who are breaking laws towards these animals. This article is directed at people who are for animal protection, and want to make sure that action is being taken towards poaching and people trafficking animal parts. The Republic of Congo’s message is that countries need to start taking in stand when it comes to law enforcement, and the protection of its animals. Usually people who were caught poaching or trafficking were given a few hundred dollar fine, and now they are given a long jail sentence and thousands in fines. Naturally this has helped to decrease the number of people who are breaking laws towards these endangered species. I agree with the authors claims that this strict enforcement will have a lasting impact and should be applied by more countries around the world.
Burd, Stephen. “ Governement Plans Survey to Support Endangered Species Act.” The Chronicle. March 31, 1993.
The goal of this article is to show that American’s, even though it was eighteen years ago, were already experiencing problems in regards to endangered species. Thankfully, they the government was already beginning the Endangered Species Act and enforcing it. Most of the problems discussed in this article involve the regulation of where developers can or cannot develop land. This is an ongoing issue today and some animals are truly running out of space to habitat due to huge companies developing large tracks of land that some animals use as a home.
"Groups File Lawsuit to Prevent Illegal Deaths of Endangered Whales." Targeted News Service [TNS] 1 Nov. 2011. Student Edition. Web. 8 Nov. 2011.
Conservation and animal protection groups have filed a law suit asking the federal court of Massachusetts to hold the National Marine Fisheries Service accountable for the continuance of four federal fisheries that injure and kill endangered whales, which also includes the highly endangered right whale. These whales are getting caught up in nets and fishing gear, it can cause death due to drowning or wounds. It has been reported that whales are increasingly becoming entangled in this equipment and in some cases causing these endangered whales to die. The right whale is almost extinct so even one death can contribute greatly to their chances of becoming extinct. However, it is productive and promising to see lawsuits filed against companies who are killing or injuring any sort of endangered species.
Fears, Darryl. "Loss of Predatory Animals Is Causing a Boom in Prey." Washington Post. 15 Jul 2011: A.3. SIRS Issues Researcher. Web. 08 Nov 2011.
The recent decline in large predators such as lions, whales, wolves, sharks, types of big cats, and herbivores has led to an increase in prey that is throwing off the natural world and this is having an effect on humans. Many have already experienced the effect of this. The loss of these big predators has meant that the smaller animals are beginning to feed off many peoples crops, effecting local markets and water systems. Hopefully, this can still be repaired and fixed, but if we cannot help to preserve these endangered species then this could potentially be catastrophic in the long run.

swa #23

A. My issue is the affects and moral injustices that are due to the extinction, endangerment, poaching practices, and continual decrease in certain animals species. Endangered species is becoming an evermore present problems in today's world. Some species that people know and love are dwindling down day by day, and a significant factor of this is poaching and human affects to these animals and their habitats. Many people sell animals on the black market, and even sell specific animal parts. Some animals such as lions and tigers that are decreasing have an impact on how much some species grow due to these animals not being hunted down with results in overpopulation in some cases.

B. Many people have a stance when it comes to this issue. Some people argue that killing certain animals, although it is still causing harm to the species, is a necessary requirement in order to live. For example in smaller countries where people have to hunt for food. Some people's entire income is a result of poaching, although it is ethically wrong. There are those who are all for protecting these endangered species and are trying to help animals on the brink of extinction. There are organizations and groups whose sole purpose is to protect the endangerment of animals, and many people donate money to the causes around the world.

C. There are the people and governments who take action towards stopping poaching. There are even laws that have been set in place around the world. Some people would argue that It is necessary to kill these animals for personal reasons and for valuable resources. These would be the people who believe that poaching is not entirely bad. Then there are the organizations and groups who are trying to raise awareness about the issue. I guess the next group would be between the people who support trying to help animals and the people who are just indifferent to the cause.

D. I personally think that animal injustice is morally and ethnically wrong. Endangered species should be protected and poachers should be prosecuted. I believe that extinction is a serious problem and could eventually occur to some animals in the near future if they are not protected.

in class writing assignment

The problem is that animal preservation throughout the world is becoming less important and that species are rapidly dwindling down.
It is important because these are amazing animals that are being hunting, poached, or becoming extinct and something needs to be done.
The people affected are the people of the earth who love animals and are trying to help all the species in danger of becoming extinct, or people who want to end poaching.
People might disagree that there are plenty of animals on the planet and that only a few species are becoming extinct, and one also might argue that the killing of these animals are necessary in the sense that items can be collected from their body for for or money selling purposes.

swa #21 Nation Shudders...

The article is very satirical and is trying to get the point across that people are becoming more so lazy than ever when it comes to reading anything. The author goes to extremes to show how not being able to find a shortcut is really affecting the lives or people who are attempting to read this article. Although this is a funny article, it tackles a real problem that we face today which is the lack of effort that people put forth in their lives when it comes to having to focus or actually try to figure something out.
The hyperbole, i believe, is the repetitiveness of satire which is basically what the entire article is consisted of. The use of constant satire really gets across the entire point of the article, and does inspire one to keep reading. However you look at it, people are becoming to technology dependent and always looking for a short way out. Which is what the author is expressing in this piece.

Response to internet article

The article is one of disdain towards to current industrial manufacturing of foods, and primarily dealing with farms that raise and slaughter animals. The author claims that this new process of slaughtering animals is not only bad for the animals, but this is causing the food to become susceptible to becoming contaminated. Therefore, he believes that the FDA and government  should focus on reviving the small and traditional farms in America instead of these farms that produce not such a high quality meat or egg in mass quantities. the author uses some pathos appeal, but he does not really focus on the animals too much. His main focus is conveying how harmful the food we are eating to us could be contaminate which would result in us being affected in years to come. I believe that his argument is convincing: however, i think that he should have backed up the article with a little more evidence because some of his article just seems to primarily be his opinion although it is most likely true.

long essay 2

John Waggett
Mrs. Mikhaylova
English 102
10/12/11
                                                            Advertisement Images

The ads I used have the same general purpose; they are designed to get the reader to believe that their product will somehow change their lives or make them happier for a period of time. Both images apply to the modern society we live in today, and the great lengths people will go to in order to convince people to buy their product.
The images I have chosen are an Old Spice ad and a Newport cigarette ad. Although those products do not really coincide, their messages are almost the same. They are both intended to have a visual effect on the reader and strike their attention. Both ads use strong and bold colors to create a sense of vitality and life, even though one add has to do with cigarettes. In the Newport advertisement the male and female have bright clothes on as well as the background being green, and in between them is a yellowish looking light. Ironically the color green is usually associated with life, not cigarettes. The yellow is possibly an example of the spark to people may obtain while smoking together, or perhaps just light the cigarette in general. The spark can also be related to a new relationship starting, and in this image the male and female may have started a relationship due to one another’s interest with Newport cigarettes. The Old Spice ad does not convey quite as many colors that blatantly stand out, but the ad focuses more on symbols or typical standards. The “pleasure!” bellow the two smoking ads a sort of sexual innuendo which can also be thrown under the vitality category. The Old Spice advertisement is a picture a guy who has two sides. The right side is that of him being a normal or typical boring guy holding Old Spice products, and on the left is the same guy but he looks like a could be in the rock band Kiss. He has a rock guitar that happens to have a bikini top on it, long black hair, no shirt, and a painted face. In other words, an extreme before and after when using Old Spice. This is definitely trying to convey a sexual or cool persona for the person using an Old Spice product. Almost like Old Spice is trying to say that if you use one of their products then you will become a rocking guitar hero that scores girls regularly. However, everyone knows one product cannot achieve this, but it is the thought or quick glance at the product which brings up these thoughts and may be able to attract the consumer to buy such based on what they are trying to accomplish with personal hygiene products. With the Old Spice ad, the guys side before using the old spice product is white and after apparent use it prominently black, and this is a reference towards getting rid of purity or becoming more rebellious. This rebellious nature is almost glorified in the ad as well as the Newport ad trying to justify that smoking may not entirely be that harmful for someone although everyone knows it is.
Both the Newport and Old Spice ad are trying to get a message of changing yourself for the better. Old spice, however, is the only product out of the two that can technically do this because smoking can lead to death. These ads try to get the consumer to see that their product will enhance their chances of having a good time. The Newport ad is showing that smoking socially may be a way to attract the opposite gender and lead to getting to know someone. The Old spice ad makes the buyer feel that the product will lead to themselves becoming more confident which may potential lead to attracting ladies as much as a rock star would, although probably not. This bad boy image is becoming more prominent in youth of society today, and is targeted by companies looking to and increase the range of their market appeal. Consequently, the ads are somewhat outlandish in that Old Spice cannot turn someone into a rock star and Newport cigarettes can only hurt one’s health and not create a sense of pleasure unless they really enjoy cigarettes that extremely. This theory of changing yourself based on what product you use is not entirely a new concept for society, but the intensity of how much people use items that do such is increasing. Increasing so much the companies have to continuously try to get a step above the rest, and what better way to do this than coming up with advertisements that are visually striking and grab the consumer attention.
These ads probably would not have had such in impact or appeal in the past, but the never ending trends of world keep making companies further expand advertisement ideas. People may have even been appalled by these ads due to their unrealistic nature or that some people would have taken them too seriously. However, the striking nature of these images is sure to attract customers, and maybe just to figure out what kind of abnormal outfit the guy in the Old Spice ad has on. As far as the Newport ad goes, most people know that smoking is diminishing to one’s health, but the ad is trying to convey a positive side to smoking. The one subject both ads have most in common is a reference to sexual appeal. The Old Spice as is suggesting that their product may lead to more sexual encounters. The Newport ad is suggesting that smoking may lead to an encounter, or that it could lead to an attraction between people through a sense of connection or just general attraction.
Ads will always bring out the unusual image, but they are this way in order to catch the reader’s attention for better or for worse. These two ads are both prominent in this current time and should be successful based on the images displayed in both because they fully attract the reader. The Old Spice picture is more eye popping as to where the Newport ad is intended more to convince to customer that smoking may have its advantages. Both images use color, sexual related themes, and bold statements for the consumer to ponder upon which will make the product have a higher chance of being purchased. Social and cultural issues are also brought about in these images to have even more of a profound impact on the consumer. These issues are equally used to convey that these products will have an impact on the buyer’s life for the better, or maybe that is just what the product wants one to believe.

Outline

Thesis Statement: Both of the ads I used have the same general purpose, they are designed to get the reader to believe that their product will somehow change their lives or make them happier for a period of time.
1.      The general persona these images create.
a.       It is clear they both are intended to have an effect on the person viewing the magazine.
b.      How bold color is used to create a sense of life and vitality, even though one product is a cigarette.
c.       Both products pictures have to deal with attraction of the opposite gender which is a fundamental topic as of recently.
d.      The stark contrast of the person in the Old Spice ad.
e.       How Newport tries to somehow get into the viewer’s mind that smoking is not all bad.

2.      The message both ads are trying to get across.
a.       Buying their product will somehow increase your chances of having a good time.
b.      Both products seem to change your persona and general outlook.
c.       Also these ads are outlandish, especially the Old Spice ad where the guy literally has two sides. As opposed to the Newport cigarette ad trying to convey how smoking gives one “pleasure”.
d.      Both ads alos give off a bad boy like image which is becoming more popular nto today’s society.
3.      Why these ads appeal to people today and why they are more than likely effective.
a.       People are now trying to change themselves more than ever, this idea is evermore present in the Old Spice ad. The Newport ad basically just tries to convey that smoking is “cool”, and can give one “pleasure”. Naturally, there are two people of the opposite sex in the Newport ad.
b.      They both seem to catch the readers eye because they so outlandish.

Conclusion Sentence: Ads will always bring out the unusual image , but they are this way in order to catch the reader’s attention for better or for worse.

Fear Factories

“Fear Factories”
In Scully’s article describing his book he conveys a strong, formal, and structured argument against animal cruelty and how it should become a conservative cause and not only a liberal pity party.
Scully begins his essay by sting what her believes in regard to the subject. Scully states how animal problems should not have to suffer due to the nation’s ongoing struggle between conservatives and left wing liberals, and that to a moral sense we are all the same under God. He then turns to a broader sense of the topic in which he begins to bring general and ethical morals into the equation. Ethos and pathos are greatly used by the author in order to draw the reader more into the argument. Scully tries to get the reader not only to sympathize with the animal but the people who are trying to protect the animals. His argument then becomes more specific when he starts talking about the actual process or how some animals are gruesomely murdered at these slaughter houses, and how inhumane that process has become. \On an ethical level it is wrong, and something should be done to control this at the very least. Scully does an impressive job of going from a general view to a more specific way of arguing his cause. Finally, after going into detail, Scully then returns to the larger sense of the problem and how it is a human’s moral obligation to not only their fellow man but to all the animals of which inhabit this world, and that human’s need to either control this very soon before it gets too out of hand or just stop the process completely.

post secret card comments

Comments for the post secret card:
1.      The secret was that the person writing the card was James Bond, and he had just returned from Russia like, From Russia with Love, the first James Bond movie. I felt the peace was pretty implicit unless the person reading this had no idea who James Bond is.
2.      The visual elements I used were more so clues as to who the person was such as a nice suit, drinking martinis, and going after exotic women.
3.      I did not really manipulate text or font because I doubt James Bond would have done that in a post card.
4.      I wanted to portray the persona as the Sean Connery version of James Bond that most people like. The bad boy lady’s man with way too much confidence, and a dry but hilarious sense of humor.
5.      I want the reader to feel about the secret as entertaining and somewhat obvious I guess because it is James Bond who is a well-known figure.

Peter Menzel Photography

Menzel's collection of photos show a significant different in the eating patterns around the world. These images show how the rest of the world eats more exotic and non manufactured food. Many pictures show animals that have been prepared for eating although they may not look prepared to the typical American eye. One can also induce that the poorer the country is then the less amount of food they will consume in a week. Most of this food is cultivated off the land on farms and fields. Where as one when one looks at the picture of the American family they see a completely different trend than that of the other pictures. The American family eats a significant amount more and less healthy which is usually associated with America. He is trying to show the difference between the rest of the world and America, and how American's need to change their eating habits as well as their consumption rate.

Berry would encourage college students to try to eat healthier. If at all possible start a garden and grow your own food, but that probably is not possible for a college student. Also try to get food other than on campus food. Go out into the community and buy fresh produce. Have a better understanding about the food you are eating and where it came from. A student needs to have more control of their diet because this affects their academic performance. While you are in college one needs to start developing these skills even if they can not necessarily live by these guidelines quite yet. When at all possible it would be good for students to prepare their own food, but primarily start eating healthier at a younger age.

Wrangham goes into extensive detail in explaining why he believes that humans are the way we are today and have developed due to mastering fire. Primarily cooking meat and chicken type foods helped cavemen eventually become the normal human we see today. He suggests that civilizations starting using fire way sooner than people used to believe was possible. Cooking also helps to develop a social order. In which people have designated responsibilities and have to do their job in order to create a functional system. Meat also helps people grow faster than normal food.

Peer Review

I would like to know if the paragraph transitions are smooth and if i varied my sentence structure. Also do i focus too much on the actual topic or the writer's way of portraying the text into an argument? Do my sentences flow and is my paper a good rhetorical analysis?

Altruism
Judith Lichtenberg’s short writing, “Is Pure Altruism Possible?”, dwells with the possibility that complete selfishness can actually occur. Lichtenberg gives examples of what can be thought of as altruism, and then she attaches some counter arguments stating that altruism is always for some sort of profit for the person of who is acting. However, then she mounts her theory that people can do good for others not just for some sort of personal satisfaction, but for the wellbeing of the person in need.
Lichtenberg seems to be very into her topic of conversation, and it is evident that she has spent time researching different and opposing theories. The idea that one can be that unselfish, even Christ-like, captivates her and the reader. It is an age old question, but one that is sure to be contemplated for years to come. Lichtenberg wants to show that it is possible to be altruistic by doing well for the benefit of others, and if this makes you feel better about yourself on the inside then it is still considered to be altruistic and should be viewed in such light. The author has to be trying to convey this message to all sorts of age groups, race and gender because the argument is eternal and not just associated with a particular culture. Regardless that this worldly view is probably viewed in high esteem around the globe, there are surprisingly some cultures that would frown upon altruism. Therefore, one would need to have some sort of religious background and most likely a functioning conscious to understand the message Lichtenberg is trying to get across to the reader. The vast majority of people reading this article are sure to be living in the United States of America so it would suite most American because the norm for people living her are Christian so this is sure to help with getting the message across as well.
Lichtenberg develops her argument fairly clearly, she could be a little more clear in the middle of her text as to which side she believed until waiting until the end to say that she does in fact state her belief that altruism does and can exist even in our ever growing malevolent world today. The argument that Lichtenberg produces would fall under the multi-sided argumentative category due to how she shows both her side and the opposing side, and Lichtenberg does give of pretty decent synopsis of the opposing side’s philosophy’s towards how altruism may be impossible. Thankfully, she does a fantastic job of describing what altruism is and both sides of the argument so the reader does not have to go research the topic. Therefore, Lichtenberg has recognized and responded to alternate views which all can but make her agreement more effective and able to believe.
Due to the ethical appeal of the writing, ethos, Lichtenberg has furthermore developed her writing and the appeal of her topic making her more respectable which most indefinitely results in making people take her side of that argument stating the altruism does exist. Lichtenberg also does an impressive job of using examples and it is equally apparent and boarder line obvious that Lichtenberg most likely has a significant amount of moral fiber. She believes in the good of humanity, and the possibility that one day we all can become one or at least make the world a better place to live in if people can unselfishly helping people. This argument deals more so with the logical than sympathetic side. It has to do with how the reader feels about to the certain topic on the inside and not a strictly sympathetic manner. Although, Lichtenberg does use some examples that would appeal to emotion she tries to stay away from the and focus on facts instead of strictly one’s beliefs. This is effective however because it makes her argument more believable to the reader. Lichtenberg’s argument is very intellectual and she does display her impressive vocabulary, but her writing is still able to be comprehended if one focuses on what point she is portraying. The complexity of her argument is still enough to confuse people, but the logical depth to her discussion requires an intellect value of the argument to be able to effectively develop her point to the reader. Lichtenberg’s tone also contributes a significant amount to developing her point. It is somewhat serious and also vaguely normal. She could just as well be having this conversation with a normal person whom she happens to be friends with, and this mellows out her conversation instead of trying to create some tense attitude of doom and gloom. She does not use much design or any pictures in her writings, but they doubtable could have helped to further her argument because it is not so much a show and tell argument.
Lichtenberg’s uses of other philosopher’s belief’s definitely helps out her argument and makes it more believable to the reader which in turns makes her argument once more increasingly effective. I doubt the argument at hand would be taken into different account in most cultures because a conscious probably resides in all humans making them susceptible to the contents of her argument. Most people also have the ability to associate with her argument and her beliefs. We have all been in a situation where we could have helped a person but chose not to instead, and most likely we have also been in a situation where we helped someone for further benefit of ourselves or to make ourselves feel better. However, I doubt many people have been truly altruistic, which is the reason people strike such an interest in the topic at hand. Lichtenberg sticks to her argument and does not get side tracked which adds also to her argument as a whole, and can help make it more believable. Lichtenberg’s argument is well thought out and well developed as a whole. Her fundamental beliefs are thoroughly portrayed and captured throughout the course of her writing, and they capture the reader and force them to be drawn into the argument at hand.

working thesis analysis

Alice Walter's, "A Healthy Constitution", overviews her regards to the problematic situations society has been forced to deal with due to processed or fast food, and she does an excellent job of conveying her beliefs through her structure and appeal to humanity.

Rhetorical Analysis
I chose to analyze a writing by Alice Walters called “A Healthy Constitution” in which Cooper shows her disdain towards processed and fast food. She believes that people, especially kids, so not be so prone to this at a young age. Kids, however, that are introduced to her Chez Panisse Foundation are more likely to become healthier and further themselves in the process of growing up. They will become a better steward to society and more responsible. Walter uses both ethos and pathos when writing this piece to grasp the reader. She tries to appeal to the parents of kids who want to teach them how to grow and sustain healthy eating habits, and ethically she wants to show that growing your own food is also more productive for society and all who depend on the hard workers of America to make this country great. Walter cleverly starts with a more narrow focus when concentrating on kids needing healthier food at school, and then proceeds to broaden her to society as a whole. This is an effective strategy because it usually helps the reader understand the primary purpose of the author’s writings, and her intentions for writing this. She also is trying to promote her own opinion which she cannot be blamed for doing because her theory or beliefs could seriously help out America due to the fact that we are the country with the highest obesity rate.

Goodman on surrogacy

Surrogacy?
Goodman expresses her discontent with surrogacy throughout this short piece. She believes that this act is taking our planet towards a step in the wrong direction. Third world countries and even more so civilized societies are now starting to take part in this new marketplace phenomenon. However, this may be financially helpful for certain woman in these countries who make trivial amounts of money every year. That would be about the only upside to surrogacy, but Goodman implies that she believes this is ethically and morally wrong. Some women do not even consider the baby being born in their own womb to be theirs.
Goodman uses pathos in order to appeal to the emotion of the reader. Her examples of pathos grasp the reader and commence to make one enthralled in the topic presented.  Goodman probably tries to make one feel bad for the babies of which are born so their birth mother can gain a subsequently inhumane few thousand. This would most likely upset a vast majority of women. Goodman’s tone towards the respective subject also translates the general point she is trying to get across about her feelings regarding surrogacy. A certain level of sarcasm is present in this piece which magnificently portraits her non hypothetical opinion considering the topics ghastly nature because the situation is in fact real and so is her sarcasm displayed in the text.
This topic strikes me as problematic, memorable and disturbing. I find this problematic because surrogacy is wrong, and there is always the possibility that it could evolve into an even worse problem. Goodman’s argument is memorable because consequently I have never heard of surrogacy, and I think that is fundamentally corrupt and vile. Lastly, the thought of a woman having eggs and sperm that do not belong to her or her significant other being combined to make a human being is morally and equivocally unjust to society and existence.

Catherine Beecher

The information i gathered about Beecher does not come as a surprise at all. She came from a wealthy family, was home schooled until she was sent off to a private school, she supported women and women becoming teachers, she felt that women were more so inclined than men to become teachers and she blatantly expressed this through her actions and writing, and she took over the housekeeping duties at the age of sixteen when her mother died which did not either surprise me. Beecher self taught herself many things and became very knowledgeable  for a woman during this time. Which did not come as a shock either based on how extensive and difficult to follow her writing was. Lastly, Beecher says that women are best suited to be mother's and teachers' instead of getting caught up in politics or business.

A woman's Place?

A Woman’s Place?
Beecher’s definition of a housekeeper is way more thorough than any other explanation I have ever heard of when explaining any sort of woman position involving a house. Regardless, her definition of a housekeeper extends far and beyond what one would expect. Beecher goes to great depth in order to explain why she thinks being a house keeper or good woman is so important. This equable and cheerful temper that Beecher always associates will the housekeeper is one that she incessantly harps on. The temper, as she would say, should be in a controlled manor, but not one of anger or that of frustration. She is to remain calm and collected like the true lady she is.
Beecher then continues to go off on several steps to becoming an optimum house keeper. A woman should not take her job lightly, if she were to do so this would increase the difficulty tenfold. She is to take it seriously because without a sense of purpose or motivation there dwindles the chance of her succeeding. Another is to go ahead and assumer to everything is going to work out, and to meet this opposition of even the best thought out plans to fail and interfere with the rest of the family. A woman should also understand that there is going to being struggles, trails, and tribulation whenever being the fundamental housekeeper as she is, and she would do well to learn such earlier on in the process. The woman should be able to forgive and forget. Not all actions need repercussion, and the woman would do well to be understanding and mindful of those who are less developed in life. Finally, religion and a faith in God is the single most important step to becoming a housewife. Beecher, however, does maintain some difference between housekeeper and woman. Both are extremely important to life, but still there are some differences.

Wiesel’s views towards the world as a whole are one of concern and alarm. He cares deeply for the deprived and attempts to share this concern and willingness to help the world through as many avenues as possible. In his interview with Richard D. Heffner, Wiesel feels as though the more privileged are and should be held responsible for those who are less fortunate. Information is needed in order to stay up to date with world issues. However, Wiesel said that too much information is stored away and not really used. People are too focused on the now, and are less interested on what recently happened that is still in need of fixing.

Wiesel also states that people need to listen more often. Those who need helping out usually can never inform people of their situation. Therefore, it is our moral obligation to listen, listen and see what they need. Wiesel refers often to the Bible and God in his responses. Wiesel conveys stories from the Bible in order to better represent our responsibility to help our fellow man or to be our brother’s keeper. Religion plays a substantial role as well. Wiesel believes that through religion people can unite to solve problems that all mankind face and are threatened by.

A problem that Wiesel blatantly states is that we are bombarded everyday with information, and so much information that it is hard to constantly fathom what is actually going on with societies on the planet. We collectively need to concentrate on the needs of others and not just the new top story. If we all do this, Wiesel believes that we can create a better world and a better tomorrow.
